Course Overview

Introduction to Community Housing provides new workers with information to assist them understand their work in community housing and what role they play in delivering high quality services to their customers and tenants. It offers a structured program to develop an understanding of the industry, the current environment of service delivery, issues which each new worker may need to address, and individual support mechanisms. It is well known that a programmed introduction to community housing will help employees adjust to their new working environment, critically engage them and assist in their future retention.

  • Understand the social housing industry and the development and growth of community housing.
  • Identify the housing policies (internal and external) which impacts on the delivery of services to customers and tenants.
  • Identify the issues which may impact customers and tenants.
  • Understand the principles, best practice and values behind the work undertaken.
  • Prepare strategies which will ensure your own wellbeing in your work.

 

  • Introducing the social and community housing environment to explore what is social and community housing, the structure of social housing in the context of different housing types.
  • Working effectively in the social housing environment with a focus on legal and ethical requirements, self-care and reflective practice.
  • Identifying factors in promoting good customer service in an environment where housing professionals are required to engage with a culturally diverse and increasingly complex needs customer base.

This course is delivered one full day via online Zoom workshops. Face to face delivery can be organised on request.

Karren Beaumont is a highly experienced community housing professional with a strong background in housing, homelessness, and frontline support. Over the course of her career, she has worked across both the government and non-profit sectors, supporting individuals and families with complex needs through assertive outreach, tenancy management, crisis intervention, and case coordination.

Karren currently delivers training as a Housing Specialist with CHIA NSW, where she brings practical insight, sector knowledge, and a learner-focused approach to her sessions. Her training is shaped by years of hands-on experience and a deep understanding of the real challenges faced by workers and clients alike.

Known for her warm and engaging facilitation style, Karren is committed to creating safe, inclusive learning environments that encourage reflection, build confidence, and strengthen practice across the housing and community services sector.
